During a site visit to a mine to audit master switches in 2019 on a maintenance day, we were approached by one of the technology team members performing maintenance on the operator console’s two-way radios. This is sometimes controlled by the buttons in the joystick controller. After a brief discussion, the technology team learned that Leveltec supplied joysticks and that they required a new joystick control system for CCTV cameras as the operators needed to use a keyboard and mouse to operate the cameras causing a slower cycle time. The scope of supply was to develop and supply and joystick controller to replace the keyboard and mouse with integration software that allows the cycling of camera, window zoom in and out, and pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) of all cameras on the dragline.

Original Camera Joystick

Objective

Increase operator comfort and efficiency whilst using camera systems and work with the technology team to deliver a working proof of concept.

Solution

The solution was developed and trialed over 6 months. During that time, we carried out preliminary software development, field trials with proof of concept and operator immersion, and then deployment/installation.

Development

Strengthening business through collaboration! Working closely with the Camera Manufacturer and Software developers, we gathered the operational requirements of the system and began developing an interface that was controlled by our Spohn + Burkhardt HS0 Joystick.

Field Trials

Field Trials

Once the proof of concept was successful, we moved to deploy and test the installation at site with the technology and field maintenance teams. During that process, we were able to remotely resolve software challenges and all in the same day onsite. The installations were successful meaning the project could be advanced and deployed to maintenance days and shutdowns.

Deployment

During the deployment, we received further feedback from installation contractors and operators. We were able to quickly include an enclosure kit and make some edits to software which were easy to install and without issue.

Conclusion

The project was a success and resulted in deployment in machines. This product can be connected to many applications and takes industrial joysticks into a digital platform.
