Objective
Design, configure and deploy an environmental monitoring system for compliance that was rapid to deploy and with minimal infrastructure or resources. The systems also needed to provide alerts for any sensors that were outside a specific threshold.
The main environmental objective was temperature monitoring.
Solution
A purpose-built Tekon wireless DUOS IoT system.
The Tekon DUOS system was the perfect product for this application. The DUOS system transmitters are battery-powered and can be deployed up to 4km LoS from their gateway. Understanding the application for the client and their goals enabled us to perform pre-commissioning at Leveltec’s factory as well as preconfigure the web-based data logger.
We deployed 6 transmitters in the field out of a possible 55, meaning there is plenty of room for future expansion and the client only pays for what is required now.
The added advantage of the battery-powered transmitters was the speed at which they were installed. Leveltec did not need to run any power or control cables and still covered an area of 200x100m. With no cable tray to run it was an enormous advantage to labour resources, the only fieldwork for the transmitters was to mount a transmitter bracket kit with all the screws included.
With the pre-configured transmitters deployed we powered the centrally located DUOS IoT gateway and LTE router. The 4G router provided the connection to the Web-based Tekon IoT platform. The system was fully deployed now and ready for functional testing.
During the functional testing we confirmed all deployed transmitters were connected to the gateway, the gateway is sending data to the IoT platform and the network strength was suitable meaning the transmitters didn’t need to be moved or a repeater installed.
The IoT platform is the backbone of the whole system. The easy-to-configure dashboard was configured to do the following:
- Dashboard displaying gauges of the 6 temperatures
- Trendline graphs showing temperature vs time
- Alarms – Email and SMS
- Alarm 1 – >= x degree Celsius
- Alarm 2 – >= x degree Celsius
- Transmitter signal lost
- Gateway signal lost
- Reporting
- Weekly periodic email report in PDF format showing a summary of the past week’s temperatures.
The feature to use drag and drop style widgets is an enormous advantage over traditional HMI and SCADA systems when applied for monitoring only. The total development time to build the dashboard was less than 4 hours meaning more sensors can be deployed and less engineering required to display the information.

Rethinking monitoring and embracing IoT systems has set this client up to be future-facing and in turn, has reduced operational risk while remaining compliant.
